Dr. Herman Thomas Scholarship
Every year the Mu Tau Chapter grants a scholarship to a deserving non-Greek
male who possessed admirable characteristics and scholastic achievement.
Every applicant is required to have a 2.5 GPA, in good standings with
the university and write an essay that described what brotherhood meant
to them.
About the Scholarship
Dr. Herman Thomas was very active in dramatic and religious affairs in
undergraduate school. At the graduate level, he specialized in the areas
of religious education and American Religious History. He also has a varied
experiential background leading a group in Duke University's Project Nicaragua
(1966); participant in the Detroit Urban Work Conference (1965); Campus
Ministry Internee at Binkley Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, N.C. (1965;
1968); Assistant Minister at Cullowhee Methodist Church under the Duke
Endowment.
Dr. Thomas has been a teacher at Berkley High School, Aberdeen, and N.
C.; Director of Student Affairs, Morris College, Sumter, S.C.; teacher
in Religious Studies and Black Studies (and Coordinator of Black Studies)
at Springfield College, Springfield, MA; and Assistant and Associate Professor
of Religious Studies in the Department of Religious Studies as well as
Assistant Director of Afro-American and African Studies at UNC at Charlotte.
For the academic year of 1985-86, Dr. Thomas was elected to the post of
Faculty Associate in Administration in the Office of the Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs, the first of two UNCC faculty so honored. As a Faculty
Associate, Dr. Thomas conceptualized and implemented the University Transition
Opportunities Program (UTOP), which he still serves as Coordinator.
Dr. Thomas life principles has been set upon manly deeds, scholarship
and love for all mankind. We pay tribute to his honorable efforts and

throught with the rest of the application.
The Dr. Herman Thomas Scholarship, worth $350.00, is given to a non-Greek
African American male that exemplifies a life of academic scholarship,
community service and campus involvement.
